I’ve created a new Wikibase on Miraheze called “Miraheze Communities”. It seeks to create one Wikibase item per Miraheze wiki. There are over 20,000 Miraheze wikis, so this is a good opportunity for us to organize and build metadata around these wikis. We’ve already started seeding it with data from Miraheze’s existing APIs.
This has us thinking whether Wikibase could be used as a mechanism to reboot WikiApiary. WikiApiary is, or at least it’s supposed to be, a MediaWiki site that lists all the other MediaWiki sites that its crawlers are aware of. It’s built on Semantic MediaWiki and has been plagued with scaling issues. As far as I know there’s nothing wrong with the crawlers themselves, just with the wiki hosting the resulting data. Could Wikibase potentially be used to host this kind of data? If so, Librarybase would be a good destination for that data.
